Hello, my name is David Wells [ davidwells49@gmail.com]. I live on the north shore of Lake Erie with my partner in crime Jackie Davies.
This blog, Dave's Back Porch, is meant to just follow my thoughts and doings as I meander through life. The hope is that some people will get caught up in it the way they might a soap opera, although it probably won't be that dramatic.
I spend my time making music, taking photographs, writing short stories, making jewelry, walking the beach looking for sea glass (which we use to make jewelry), and, when I really have to, I drive a truck delivering flowers all over Ontario.
Actually, I do like that job, gets me out and about, but it becomes harder as the years pass. I also like building things such as the back porch in the title of this blog. For years I've wanted to sit out on my old family rocker and contemplate the world from a back porch.
And since this summer, when I finally built one, I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It's the calmest spot on the property. You can't see the road or other houses (at least when the leaves are out).
We didn't move into a forest but it kind of feels like one now, so much has grown up over the years. In the summer you can't even see the house from the road. From this I came up with my three step no fail landscaping plan. (1) buy a house (2) live in it for 20 years without touching anything. (3) then cut back what you don't want. So you end up with a beautiful forested property, full of native vegetation (that which grows naturally without help). Laissez-faire kicks butt!
I'm also lover of literature, both reading it and reading about it. I can happily curl up on a cold winter day with the Encyclopedia of English Literature or the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. People who watch TV always say What do you do!? We have a TV but it's not hooked up for that, only movies on DVD, many of which we get at the Port Rowan library along with all manner of books. It's small as libraries go but it's kept us entertained for years.
Also, I should point out that I don't edit beyond spell-check or the odd change to help with clarity. I put down what is in my head at the time and leave it at that. If it seems to be all over the place that's probably a touch of A.D.D. I once saw a big building with the sign A.D.D. WAREHOUSE. Which is pretty funny if you think about it, with no-one being able to concentrate long enough to put things where they belong. But, I digress. All I'm saying is I don't sit for an hour wondering what to write and then sit for another hour rearranging it: I just write.
That's about it for now. Hope you enjoy the writing. With a billion or so blogs out there, the chances of interested parties happening upon this one are slim, but maybe we'll both get lucky and find each other. See you on the page.
